Can I use college address and
other facilities for my personal correspondence?
You may be able to use the college
as your postal address. It is subject to prior
permission from the registrar. You also have
to comply with some terms and conditions which
is available to the reception.
A photocopy machine, fax facility will be available
for the students. In order for you to use this
facility, you have to collect a prepaid card
from the registry.
What do I do if I need a letter
or document (ID card, library card, prepaid
card etc) from the College?
Please go to the reception and
ask for a Student Request Form. Complete the
form and return it to the registrar. If you
need a student ID card or a library card, please
enclose a passport size photograph with your
name printed at its back.
Please allow at least 3 working days for the
process. Your request will be handled with great
care. Some request will be done with an immediate
effect.
Can I use the computers and
internet outside my class hours?
Yes, you will be given a user
name and password on your registration for internet
access and computer use from the reception.
You will have all time internet access at your
college. You are advised not to misuse this
facility. You must note that you are strictly
prohibited to access certain sites like pornographic
site, coping or loading software.
Can I borrow books from
the college library and other libraries?
Yes you can. Our library
has been designed to offer study to research
facility for all our students, teachers, and
staffs. The library supports in many ways to
develop teaching and learning achievement. It
is compatible to maintain and evaluate the changing
information requires in higher education. We
aim to maintain and develop relationships with
other library services in order to keep our
facility updated for all time.
Can I use Mobile phones at college
premises?
No. The use of mobile phones
are strictly prohibited in the class, library
and lab rooms. Please switch off your mobile
phone on entrance at your class rooms.
Can I record my lectures?
It is important that you must
seek permission from the lecturer before recording
the lectures.
Can I smoke inside the college
building?
You are not permitted
to smoke within the college building. You may
find smoking area outside the main entrance
of the college building.
Personal Healthcare:
Who do I contact if I have a
personal problem after arriving in the UK?
During your time at Brit College
you will always find a personal tutor assigned
to discuss with any issues you may require.
If you have just arrived in the UK you may find
some personal problems like:
Physical illness
Loneliness
Family problems
Homesickness
Depression
Cross cultural shock etc
In that regard please see the
Head of Student Services who can offer you a
confidential counselling service. If you feel
your difficulties will take longer time to resolve,
you can apply for Youth Counselling Service.
This service offers counselling once a week
for up to 2 years at a low cost.
How do I find a doctor?
You need to register with a
GP (General Practitioner) to receive regular
medical service. If you need a physician urgently,
you will have to find a Chemist/Pharmacy near
to where you live for emergency advice. Alternatively
you can visit your local Walk In Centre to see
a doctor. They can give you the Telephone no
of your local surgeries where you need to call
to make an appointment for your registration
with a GP. Alternatively you may find the no
from the Local Health authority.
Once you get an appointment with a GP, visit
the surgery. You will be given a form to complete.
Once you are registered you can see your doctor
as many times as you require subject to prior
appointment.
What if I need a doctor very
urgent?
If you don’t get
any appointment with your GP or need a doctor
very urgent, you may find several doctors near
to the college which you can see in an emergency.
But they will charge you £30-£40
for per consultation.
What do I do if I need
to see a dentist?
Dental treatment is not free
in the UK. You can find a local dentist from
the local health authority. Please ask your
college reception for the nearest dentists’
contact.
Working in the UK:
Can I work during my studies?
Yes. But if you are a full time
student and you are on a student visa, you are
allowed to work maximum 20 hours a week during
the term time. Only during the vacation time
of your course you may work extra hours if your
college permits you to do so. For further information
please discuss with the registrar.
What do I need to apply for
a job?
Before you apply for a job,
it is important that you have the following
things ready:

A bank account
National insurance (NI) no
A letter from the college which states your
course details including study hours.
Two references
Normally employers ask
for two references. You may take one reference
from one of your lecturers subject to prior
permission.
How do I find a job?
In the city of London it is
more unlikely that you won’t find a job.
There are plenty of part time and evening jobs
for students at supermarkets, fast food shops,
sales and marketing, pubs and bars etc. You
will find all the updates, news, advert and
vacancies in some of the popular newspapers
namely Evening Standard, Metro, London Jobs
etc.
Do I have to pay tax?
Normally students do not earn
enough to pay tax. You should ask your employer
and discuss these issues before you sign an
employment contract with them.
Visa:
Can I extend my student
visa once it expires?
Yes. If you are at the
middle of your course or willing to undertake
another course after the successful completion
of your current course, you may apply to extend
your visa. You can not carry on your studies
without a valid visa.
What do I need to extend
my student visa?
You need to apply for the extension
before it expires. But not earlier than the
last 6 weeks. You need the following documents
for an extension:

Please note that if you do not
have at least 80% attendance, the Home Office
will not extend your visa.
Can I visit another country
during my course?
Yes you can, if you are on vacation.
If You need visa contact the embassy of the
country you are wishing to travel for an appointment.
Bring all the documents they require during
the interview. You will need a letter from the
College. Please complete the student request
form and return it to the registrar.
Travelling in London:
How do I travel one place to
another in London?
There are all kinds of transport
available in London. Travelling in London is
fast, reliable and comfortable. You will find
routes covered dynamically by bus, train, tube
(underground), c2c and British rail services.

Can I get discounts on transport?
Yes, you can have 30%
discount on London transport. If you are a full
time student aged 18 or over you can apply for
a London Transport Student Photo Card. Discounts
on coach and British Rail services are also
available for students. Ask British Rail stations
for details.
How do I apply for a Student
Travel Photo Card?
Collect the application form
from the reception of the College.
Complete the application form and return it
to the reception for signature and college stamp.
If you have not given your credit/debit card
details in the payment section of the form,
enclose a cheque/postal order payable to Transport
Trading Limited.
Attach a passport size photograph with your
name printed on the reverse.
Post the completed application form with the
payment to the address given in the application
form.

Law I need to know:
Driving:
You must have an International
drivers license and insurance to drive in the
UK. Always wear the seat belt, otherwise you
will be fined.
Attendance:
The Home Office requirement
of attendance for International students is
at least 80%. If your attendance is not satisfactory
you may not be able to extend your visa to study
or to remain as a student in the UK.
Smoking:
You must be 16. Smoking
is prohibited in underground stations and any
other public places.
Drinking:
Drinking alcohol is permitted
for people over 18. If you look like under 21
you will be asked to show your ID that proofs
your age in most places before you buy alcohol.
It is against the law in some places to drink
in the street.
Drug:
It is illegal to use or
possess any of the following drugs in the UK:
Cannabis
Amphetamines
Heroin
Cocaine
Ecstasy
Sexual relationships:
It is illegal to have sexual
relations with a member of the opposite sex
under the age of 16 or with a member of the
same sex under the age of 18.
AIDS and STD:
If you ever doubt that
you may have AIDS or any STD, speak confidentially
to the head of student services or contact the
