FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH –ENTRY LEVEL, LEVEL 1 & 2

Awarding Body: Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR)

Overview:

Functional English encourages learners to be confident of speaking, listening, reading and writing and enables adapting to a range of audiences and contexts. Functional Skills are gained over three levels – Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2. All learners both young people and adults would benefit from functional English to explain information clearly and succinctly in speech and writing; expressing a point of view reasonably and effectively.

Assessment:

Learners must demonstrate that they can read and understand information and instructions and then analyze how ideas and information can be presented. Learners must also demonstrate that they can make an oral presentation or report, contribute to discussions and use speech collaboratively in teams to agree actions and conclusions.

OCR’s Functional Skills English assessment comprises two components:

Reading and Writing:

OCR set and marked task-based assessment consists of 2 scenario-based tasks of 50 marks each.
Exam Duration: 60 minutes (Level 1 and 2 each)
• Controlled, supervised conditions
• Learners will be able to use a word processor to complete tasks

Speaking and Listening:

• Centre assessed
• OCR moderated
Level 1 – short discussion
Level 2 – short discussion and short presentation

Duration:

Six (6) months for each level

Progression:

Functional English is available from entry level to level 2. These levels correspond to the levels used for other qualifications within the National Qualification Framework. Each level of the functional English incorporates and builds on the previous ones so the higher levels are more challenging and demanding on the learner.

Course Fees:

Entry level £1,200
Level 1 £1,500
Level 2 £1,500
