Orientation

What is student orientation?
Brit College has designed its student orientation Programme to help international students get used to living in London and studying at the college.

Why is it important?
The orientation will help you to relax settle in, make new friends, get to know your lecturers, department heads, course of studies, lecture time tables and other academic and non academic staff .

Where will it take place?
It takes place at your college at the beginning of every semester.

What are the contents of the orientation?
Our orientation starts from the moment you arrive in London with the ''Meet and Greet'' service.

During the week we will take you through a series of information sessions which include:
Life in London
Cross cultural adjustments
Health and safety
Personal illness and other health matters
Accommodation
Bank accounts
A walking tour of the college
Details of course of studies
Introducing academic and non academic staff
Employment advice

The administration and Student: Policies and Practices

Student Attendance at lectures:
The College’s attendance procedure is explained to all students when they register at the College. Students will also be given a handbook which includes all the necessary information.

Change of personal details:
It is very important that students inform the college of any change in their details including change of address. Student details are kept in our confidential database which is used to send official notifications to students.  Any change of address and personal details  should be notified to the registrar immediately. Students should  complete the “STUDENT REQUEST FORM”, sign and return it to College reception.

Time-tables:
Timetables are available during the first week of the semester; class times and locations may be amended.

Payment of fees:
Students are required to pay their fees before at enrolment before they start their course. There are two options available for students; Students can pay their fees in advance or they can pay by instalments as per the agreed terms and conditions. Students who pay earlier will be entitled a significant discount. A discount of  5% discount is available to students who  their fees in advance. Whatever option is chosen it is important that all fees are paid on time. In the case of any financial difficulties students are encouraged to contact the credit control department at the college. Please note that the college reserves the right to call in third party to recover outstanding fees or other charges.

Student ID card:
Students will be provided a) digital ID card which they are required to carry at all times while on College premises.

Welfare:
Student's welfare information will be available during registration.  For further details please visit our website: www.britcollege.org.uk

Request for references:
If a student requires academic or personal reference s/he must apply to the registrar and it will be dealt with accordingly. They are advised to obtain the tutor's permission before applying for a reference. Please note that references will not be handed to the students but will be sent directly to whom the reference is addressed.

Recording of lectures:
It is important that students seek permission from the lecturer before recording the lectures, recording without permission is not permitted.

Policy for mobiles:
The use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited in the class and library rooms. Please ensure that you always switch off your phone before entering the college classroom.

Accommodation and student support:
We will help our students to find and arrange suitable accommodation. We will also provide guideline on the following topics.

V. Apply for NI (National Insurance) No.

IT centre:
Students must register for internet access and computer use from the reception. We will provide each student a user name and password. The computers are valuable property of the college, so therefore, students are advised not to misuse this facility. Students are strictly prohibited from accessing certain sites such pornographic ones, or illegal download or copying sites. Any student doesn't comply with this instruction will constitute a breach of disciplinary code.

Data protection act 1998:
We collect and process data and information including images about its students for administrative, academic and health and safety purposes. We comply with the data protection Act, 1998.

Notice board:
We place important information and all the latest updates on the notice board. It is the individual student's responsibility to check the notice board regularly.

Using photocopy machine:
A photocopy machine will be available for the students. In order for you to use this facility, you have to collect a prepaid card from the registry.

Student mail:
In case of emergencies students may be able to use the college as their postal address. It is subject to prior permission from the registrar. They also have to comply with the terms and conditions which are available at the reception.

Smoking:
No students are permitted to smoke within the college building. They may find smoking area outside the main entrance of the college building.

First aid facility:
First aid facilities will be available for all students. Please talk to the reception for details.

Fire caution:
Students will be made aware and familiar with the fire exits and the fire assembly point which will be discussed during registration. When a continuous alarm rings, it means there is a fire and student must immediately leave the building by the nearest exit. Students are told not to use the lift when the alarm rings and not to stop to collect your personal belongings. If you have any disabilities please draw the attention of a member of staff, please wait outside the building and do not re-enter until you are instructed to re-enter by a member of staff of the college.

Code of Conduct
We strongly encourage our students to be harmoniously integrated with all other fellow students and staff. Therefore they are required to abide by our code of conduct. Brit college does not accept from students any of the following –

i. Discrimination (racial, sexual, religious or any other)
ii. Smoking in the college premises
iii. Drinking alcohol within our premises
iv. Illegal activities
v. Abusive manner towards students, staff or anyone else
vi. Any type of misconduct
vii. Non-attendance without valid reasons or notification
viii. Improper use of library and IT facility
ix. Identity theft
x. Any other activity which leads to an understanding that the college is being disrespected.

Accommodation

We understand that most of the international students do not have any friend or family contact to accommodate them once they arrive in the UK. In that regard the College is able to assist the students to find comfortable and reasonably priced accommodation within easy travelling range of the college.

We ensure that health and safety and quality is maintained at a higher standard at all time. Usually renting a single room will cost you £80-85 a week.

Students interested to live as a paying guest with a host family could be arranged by the college. You can share the living room and bathroom with the family. If you want to have meals, you will have to make separate arrangement for that.

Health & Safety

Students' health is a vital issue for us. We ensure that student's health and safety is well maintained. We shall assist you to be registered with a GP (General practitioner) and a dentist. If you suffer from any disease the college will assist you with all the necessary steps to be taken with an immediate effect. However, we do encourage the international students, studying for less than 12 months to take out travel insurance. In addition to that, in case of any accident occurs, our first aid is stand by for all students at any time during college hours.

Food & drink

There is a canteen in the college building which serves food Monday to Friday from 9.30 till 4.30. The canteen is very well managed and specializes in sandwiches of all kind. Hot and cold drinks and other light snacks are also normally available in the canteen. In addition to that, we have a wide variety of restaurants, bars, fast food shops and all kind of traditional food shops within walking distance from our college.

Personal Tour

We assign a personal tutor for our full time students. The tutor is normally one of the teaching staff involved with the course. Your tutor will help you follow your course and assist you with any academic and personal difficulties. In addition to the main modules, we are keen to offer revision classes for you before the examinations. It will help you to achieve expected grade.

Complaints

Brit College is very much concerned about the quality of service as well as facilities and welfare of the students. Although the college tries to resolve almost all the complaints informally, the college has a formal complaints procedure to listen to the problems of students from the very beginning and provide a satisfactory solution as soon as possible.
